Sickle Cell & Thalassaemia Association of Nurses, Midwives and Allied Professionals (STANMAP) was formally established in 2016, following the merger of FAST-n (acute) and STAC (community) specialist practitioners groups. It is a national professional organisation dedicated to supporting nurse specialists, midwives, health and allied care professionals looking after clients and their families with, and at-risk of haemoglobinopathies in the UK and internationally.
The Association is established:
- To promote the role of nurses, midwives and other professionals practising in the field of haemoglobinopathies.
- To develop and maintain a network of communication and support between health and allied professionals working with individuals with haemoglobinopathies across acute and community health care sectors.
- To share knowledge, information and discuss professional issues, in order to promote best practice, equity and consistency across the specialism.
- To support practitioners in their effort to ensure appropriate care, welfare and treatment of persons who have a haemoglobinopathy, including Sickle Cell Thalassaemia and related disorders, and support their families, Carers and dependents.
- To support practitioners in their attempt to promote the effective use of national protocols, guidelines and meeting key performance indicators and clinical standards.
- To develop practitioners in their effort to apply local and national competency guidelines to enhance provision of care
- To initiate, conduct and participate in audit and research.
- To support initiatives that promote the education of health, allied and other professionals, to improve their ability to respond to the specific health and social care needs of the client group.
- To provide benevolent support and funding for clients, families and communities affected by and living with haemoglobinopathies.
